Yes, friends, it’s a real thing. Every year on September 9th, people around the world raise a glass and celebrate “International Buy a Priest a Beer Day.” And no, I didn’t make this up just to get a round out of you.

On the surface, it sounds silly. Priests are supposed to be holy, solemn, and mysterious, right? We’re the ones in black, standing at the altar, preaching about the Cross and eternity. But here’s the thing… behind the collar, every priest is also just a human being. We laugh. We struggle. We carry worries, regrets, and hopes just like anyone else.

Why Beer Matters (and It’s Not About the Beer)

Beer is just a symbol. Sharing a pint is shorthand for something deeper: fellowship. It’s a way of saying, “Father, I see you. You’re not just the guy who prays at funerals and blesses the bread, you’re also part of this community.”

When you buy a priest a beer, you’re not just filling a glass. You’re filling up his soul a little too. You’re reminding him that ministry isn’t a one-way street of pouring out, but a mutual exchange of grace, love, and laughter.

A Priest Walks Into a Bar…

Okay, that sounds like the start of a joke. But honestly, it’s a picture of what the Church is supposed to be: not a fortress for the flawless, but a gathering of imperfect people around a table. Whether that table holds bread and wine or burgers and beer, it’s about the same thing, communion.

When Jesus sat down with people, it wasn’t always in the temple. More often than not, it was at someone’s home, someone’s table, or even someone’s party. People loved Him because He showed up where they were and reminded them that God cared enough to sit down and break bread with them.

What You Can Do Today

If you see your priest, offer to raise a glass with him. If beer’s not your thing, make it a coffee, or lunch, or just a kind word. What matters is the gesture of companionship.

Because for priests, like for everyone, the simple truth is this: it means the world to be reminded that you’re not alone.

So today, September 9th, lift a glass and toast the joy of shared life. International Buy a Priest a Beer Day may sound lighthearted… and it is… but it’s also a quiet reminder of what Church is supposed to be… people loving and supporting each other in small but meaningful ways.

Cheers, friends.
