  • The Root of Gun Violence Isn’t Politics — It’s the Loss of Love for Our Neighbor

Another community has been shattered by gunfire, this time inside a church in Michigan.
We grieve again for lives lost in a place that should be a refuge.

In the coming days there will be intense debates about gun laws, mental health, politics, and even religion. Those conversations matter. But I believe they will always fall short unless we face the deeper wound beneath it all: our loss of love for one another.

Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God and to love our neighbor. When that love is absent, fear takes its place. Fear breeds anger, and anger fuels the violence we see far too often.

We cannot legislate hearts, but we can nurture them. We can rebuild a culture where we see the image of God in each person, where disagreements do not turn into enemies, and where the vulnerable are cherished rather than blamed.

Today I invite you to pause, to pray, and to recommit yourself to the simple but demanding work of loving your neighbor. Real change will come only when hearts are changed.

A Prayer for Peace

Lord of all mercy,
In this time of grief and anger,
Heal the brokenhearted,
Comfort those who mourn,
Strengthen those who work for peace,
And stir in us the love that casts out fear.
Teach us again to see Your image in every neighbor
And to walk the way of peace.
Amen.
