Today, millions of people will rise to action in what has been established as No Kings Day. For all Christians, It should be a reminder that we were not created to bow to earthly tyrants or worship political idols. We were made for freedom. We were made for God.
There is a temptation in every age to look for a strongman to save us. Someone who promises easy answers, quick victories, and a return to some imagined golden era. Scripture is honest about this human impulse. When the people of Israel begged the prophet Samuel for a king so they could be like other nations, Samuel warned them that a king would abuse power, exploit the poor, and claim authority that belonged to God alone. Yet they still cried out, Give us a king to rule over us. God allowed it, not because it was holy, but because God never forces love. He lets us choose.
The lesson of history is clear. Whenever human beings put their hope in crowns, flags, or charismatic rulers, it leads to corruption. The Gospel always calls us back to a simple truth. Only God is God. Every other power must answer to love, to justice, and to the dignity of the human person.
No Kings Day is not a rejection of leadership. Healthy leadership serves, protects, and lifts people up. Jesus did not speak against authority itself, but against the worship of it. The early Christians refused to call Caesar Lord because that title belonged to Christ alone. They did not hate Rome. They simply knew that no government, no politician, no powerful figure could ever take the place of God.
And I wonder if we need to hear that again today.
We are living in a time when political parties demand total loyalty and preachers of power disguise themselves as prophets. There are voices that tell us salvation will come from the right candidate, the right party, the right judge, the right law. Yet not once did Jesus tell us to build the Kingdom by force, or by clinging to power, or by making idols of nations. He told us instead to love God and love our neighbor, especially the lost, the least, and the left behind.
So what is the invitation today? It is simple.
Let us refuse to bow to anything less than God. Let us reject the modern idols of power, cruelty, and domination. Let us hold every leader to the measure of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve. Let us build a world where the hungry are fed, the oppressed are set free, and every person is treated as sacred. Let our loyalty belong to love.
Because in the end, there are no kings but God, and the only throne worth kneeling before is the one built on mercy.
