There is a reason that when the Church remembers St Augustine of Hippo, we also remember his mother, St Monica. She was not a bishop, theologian, or philosopher. She never penned great volumes of wisdom. What she did was pray. Relentlessly. With tears, with anguish, with perseverance. And the world is different because she did.

Monica loved her son fiercely, but she also feared for him. She feared the choices he was making, the life he was chasing, and most of all, his disregard for God. Augustine, brilliant as he was, spent his youth seeking pleasure and prestige. He lived as if faith were irrelevant, caught in hedonism and ambition. Every parent who has ever looked at their child and worried about the path they are walking knows exactly what Monica felt.

Her heart was heavy with the weight of it. She prayed in church, she prayed at home, she prayed when he left and when he returned. She prayed through tears and sleepless nights. When friends told her she was wasting her time, she kept going. When priests counseled patience, she did not stop pleading. She could not stop, because love does not give up.

And her prayers bore fruit. Not immediately. Not in the timing she might have chosen. But eventually, Augustine’s heart cracked open. Grace poured in. He became not only a believer, but one of the greatest doctors of the Church. His words still shape Christianity to this day.

Monica’s story is not only history, it is an invitation. For every parent who prays for a child who has wandered far, for every family member who holds vigil for a loved one caught in addiction, anger, or unbelief, Monica shows us that prayer is never wasted. God hears. God works in time and in ways we cannot always see.

Her life is a testimony to what Jesus told us in the Gospel: “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.” Monica kept asking, searching, and knocking. And at last, heaven answered.

So if you find yourself discouraged, take courage from Monica. Pray as she prayed. Persevere as she persevered. Trust that God can bring light even out of the darkest places.

A Prayer for Parents Who Pray for Their Children

Lord of mercy and love,
You know the hearts of parents who carry the weight of their children’s struggles.
Like Monica, we cry out to You with tears and hope.
Guard our children in their wandering,
protect them from harm,
and in Your time, draw them close to You.

Give us strength not to grow weary in prayer,
patience when answers seem far away,
and trust that Your grace can reach even into the darkest places.

We place our sons and daughters in Your hands,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
